Anamu, or Petiveria alliacea, is a well-known medicinal herb. It has long been used in traditional medicine to alleviate pain, boost immunity, and treat various chronic diseases. Studies have linked anamu to numerous potential health benefits. Anamu contains various plant-based compounds with antioxidant properties such as flavonoids, triterpenes, coumarins, sulfur compounds, and others. Animal and test-tube studies have revealed that anamu may reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. One study showed that anamu leaf extract reduces markers of inflammation, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha prostaglandin, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-6. Many animal studies have found that anamu extracts significantly alleviate pain. Animal studies further suggest that anamu may enhance brain function. One study gave rats anamu leaf extract and found that they showed improvements in learning-based tasks and memory. Evidence suggest that anumu might have anticancer properties.
