Folic acid is a more stable form of vitamin B9. It is added to refined grain products in many countries. The reference daily intake (RDI) of folate is 400 mcg DFE for adults and 600 mcg per day. Low folic acid levels during the early weeks of pregnancy have been linked to neurological defects in infants. It is recommended that all women of reproductive age take at least 400 mcg of supplemental folate per day. Folic acid may reduce the risk of certain birth defects, reduce the risk of cancer, and reduce inflammation.

Studies have shown that folic acid in high intakes can help protect against certain types of cancer. Scientists believe low folate levels may contribute to the formation of unstable DNA which may increase the risk of cancer. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24667649, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18599024/

Inflammation caused by a molecule called homocysteine may be reduced by folic acid. This molecule has also been linked to the development of heart disease. Studies have shown that homocysteine levels can be reduced by up to 25% though the link to lower rates of heart disease requires more research. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4326479/
