Xanthium strumarium, also known as rough cocklebur, is a plant native to northeastern North America and parts of Asia. It is known for its small, round burs that are coated with spiky hairs that cling to anything they encounter. Xanthium’s leaves, roots, and seeds have been used in Chines herbal medicine for thousands of years. Traditionally, it has been used to treat many diseases such as colds and coughs, headaches, gastric ulcers, fungal infections, and arthritis. Research shows that X. strumarium possesses extracts and compounds that may have a variety of health benefits including anti-inflammatory, pain relief, and antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal effects.

Phyllanthus niruri, also known as stonebreaker, is a weed found in coastal areas around the world. It’s leaves and fruit have been used in traditional herbal medicine practices. The reason it is named “stonebreaker” is because it may help combat kidney stones and protect the liver. Research has shown that Phyllanthus niruri leaves contain powerful antioxidant compounds that may help fight free radicals, which are molecules that can cause cell damage and disease. P. niruri may also have antimicrobial abilities against the H. pylori bacteria commonly found in digestive tracts. This bacterium can lead to ulcers, adnominal pain and nausea. Furthermore, it was found that beneficial bacteria are not harmed by P. niruri extract. Lastly, Phyllanthus niruri has been shown in many studies to possibly improve liver health. Researchers think it helps by decreasing hormone resistance and reducing the amount of fatty acids in the liver.
