The ketogenic or keto diet is a very little carbohydrates, high-fat diet. Once an individual starts the keto diet it takes several days for the body to enter a state known as ketosis. It is a nutritional state characterized by high levels of ketones in the blood and weight loss. Ketones are a chemical created by the liver when the body does not have enough insulin to turn sugar (glucose) into energy. The body then needs another source, so it uses fat instead. The liver turns fat into ketones and releases them into the bloodstream where the brain, heart, muscles, and other tissues can use them for fuel.
There are two main ketone bodies produced during ketosis, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate. These ketone bodies replace glucose with fuel and provide the brain, heart, and muscles with energy.
