Carnitine is a mitochondrial boosting amino acid that may contribute to increased endurance, lessen muscle damage, improve fat utilization, possibly aid in weight loss as well as enhanced brain function in elderly persons. Carnitine is a type of amino acid that benefits energy levels by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria to be used as fuel. Besides increasing endurance this amino acid also aids in preventing and protecting against muscle damage. Additionally, in a study providing a systematic review and meta-analysis, results revealed that subjects who received carnitine lost significantly more weight and showed a decrease in body mass index compared with the control group.  A study of elderly persons indicated that carnitine produced a reduction of total fat mass, increased total muscular mass, and facilitated an increased capacity for physical and cognitive activity by reducing fatigue and improving cognitive functions. Artichoke is considered a superfood. Artichoke extract, contains high concentrations of compounds found in the plant. It is loaded with vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as being an excellent source of antioxidants.

Scientific research suggests that L-Carnitine may contribute to increased endurance, lessen muscle damage, improve fat utilization, possibly aid in weight loss and enhanced brain function in elderly persons. Carnitine is a type of amino acid that benefits energy levels by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria to be used as fuel. Both human studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of this amino acid on endurance levels. In one study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, giving professional soccer players three to four grams of L-carnitine before exercise was found to prolong the time it took to reach exhaustion. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24263659

Besides increasing endurance this amino acid also aids in preventing and protecting against muscle damage. In one 2014 study published in the Asian Journal of Sports Medicine, 21 male athletes were given either L-carnitine or a placebo daily for two weeks prior to an athletic test. Compared to the control group, those who took L-carnitine were found to have lower levels of certain markers that indicate muscle damage. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25834706

While the evidence of L-Carnitine contributing to improved fat utilization and aid in weight loss is not considered conclusive, in a study providing a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, which have examined the effect of the carnitine on adult weight loss, results from meta-analysis of eligible trials revealed that subjects who received carnitine lost significantly more weight and showed a decrease in body mass index compared with the control group.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27335245

A study of elderly persons indicated that carnitine produced a reduction of total fat mass, increased total muscular mass, and facilitates an increased capacity for physical and cognitive activity by reducing fatigue and improving cognitive functions. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18065594

Artichoke extract, contains high concentrations of compounds found in the plant. It is loaded with vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as being an excellent source of antioxidants. Artichoke extract positively affects cholesterol in two primary ways. First, artichokes contain luteolin, an antioxidant which prevents cholesterol formation. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26310198  Second, artichoke leaf extract encourages your body to process cholesterol more efficiently, leading to lower overall levels.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22183827

Artichoke extract may aid people with high blood pressure. One study in 98 men with high blood pressure found that consuming artichoke extract daily for 12 weeks reduced diastolic and systolic blood pressure by an average of 2.76 and 2.85 mmHg, respectively. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22435514

Artichoke leaf extract may protect your liver from damage and promote the growth of new tissue. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1902564  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23195590  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4771653/

Artichokes contain inulin, a type of fiber which acts as a prebiotic. In one study, 12 adults experienced an improvement in gut bacteria when they consumed an artichoke extract containing inulin each day for three weeks. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18590586  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20591206/

Artichoke extract may also provide relief from symptoms of indigestion, such as bloating, nausea, and heartburn.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23195882  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14653829
