Melatonin is a hormone made naturally in the body. The pineal gland within the brain is responsible for melatonin production but it is also found in other areas, such as the eyes, bone marrow and gut. Melatonin is popularly known as the “sleep hormone,” as it can help you fall asleep. Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant, which may provide a variety of other benefits. Melatonin works with the bodies “internal clock” called circadian rhythm. It tells you when it’s time to wake up, eat, and go to sleep. It also helps regulate the bodies temperature, blood pressure and hormone levels.

Studies have shown that Melatonin can help you fall asleep easier but not knock you out. Research has also shown that melatonin can help support eye health, treat ulcers and alleviate heartburn and help with seasonal affective disorder.

Melatonin has been shown to help you fall asleep. It’s important to note that it will not knock you out but instead let your body know it is time to fall asleep. Many studies have concluded that taking melatonine before bed can help you fall asleep. In a metanalysis on studies of people with sleep disorders, researchers found that melatonin helped reduce the time it took to fall asleep by and average of 7 minutes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC43256/,https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3656905/

It may help support eye health. Melatonin has been shown to be an effective antioxidant which could help lower the risk of eye diseases. One study had 100 people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to take 3mg of melatonin over 6 to 24 months. It was concluded that daily intake of melatonin helped protect the retinas and delay damage from AMD. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17266777, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16399908

May help treat stomach ulcers and heartburn. Since melatonin has antioxidant properties it may help with stomach ulcers and alleviate heartburn. Melatonin helps reduce heartburn but was even more effective when combined with omeprazole, a common medication for acid reflux. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12121479, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20082715

Studies have shown that melatonin may help with seasonal depression. It has been shown that seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may affect up to 20% of adults in the US. There is evidence that SAD is affected by changed in light and sleep cycles. Melatonin then may help symptoms of seasonal depression by helping with the sleep cycle. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2686645/, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2686645/
