Vitamin K  An Emerging Phytonutrient

Phytonutrients are produced by plants. Scientific research, including human trials into Vitamin K are overall promising. We do know that vitamin K participates in some very important biological processes. Vitamin K helps modify proteins so they can bind calcium ions helping ensure that more calcium gets deposited in bones and less in soft tissues, thereby strengthening bones and reducing arterial stiffness.  Clinical studies have shown that vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone), [the chemical equivalent of vitamin K1 phytonadione] supplementation slows the progression of coronary artery calcification in healthy older adults. Several forms of vitamin K are used in dietary supplements, including vitamin K1 phytonadione. One study found that both phytonadione is well absorbed. Vitamin K has a plethora of potential implications, including prevention and treatment of arterial calcifications, coronary heart disease, improvements in bone strength and reduced risks of fractures as well as improvements in blood sugar-regulating hormone sensitivity.
