Protecting Our Children vs COVID-19
“We just don’t understand whether children are getting infected at low rates or just not showing very strong symptoms,” said Marc Lipsitch, head of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics, in an interview with the Harvard Gazette.
WHAT WE DO KNOW
We have learned that there are subgroups of children who appear to be at greater risk of COVID-19 complications, particularly those who are younger, immunocompromised or have other pulmonary health problems. The investigators said that children of all ages and both sexes were clearly at risk due to the coronavirus and that young children, particularly infants, were vulnerable to infection.

…no ages spared…
In a large study published in Pediatrics on March 19th, 2020 researchers conducted the first retrospective epidemiologic analysis of disease spread and severity in 2,143 confirmed or possible pediatric COVID-19 infections reported to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) from Jan 16 to Feb 8. This study showed that children of all ages in Wuhan and surrounding areas were susceptible to the COVID-19 virus, and one—a 14-year-old boy—died from it.
Doctors Have Now Mapped How Our Immune System Fights COVID-19
On March 19th, 2020, researchers in Australia said they had mapped the body’s immune response to the novel coronavirus, in a potential breakthrough in the fight against the global pandemic. Authors of the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, said it was the first time experts had mapped the body’s general immune response to the new disease. “We saw a really robust immune response that preceded clinical recovery,” Katherine Kedzierska, University of Melbourne’s Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

What We Can Do to Support our Immune System while a COVID-19 Vaccine and Treatment Medicines are Developed
Nutrition is a critical determinant of immune responses and malnutrition is the most common cause of immunodeficiency worldwide. Deficiency of single nutrients also results in altered immune responses: this is observed even when the deficiency state is relatively mild. Of the micronutrients, zinc; selenium; iron; copper; vitamins A, C, E, and B-6; and folic acid have important influences on immune responses.

Omega 3-6-9 for Children
While Omega-3 [(n-3)] fatty acids have been linked to healthy aging throughout life, these essential fats are especially important for children, as they play an important role in growth and development and are associated with numerous health benefits. The functions of the human immune system depend on the intake of micronutrients, which can act as antioxidants. Recent clinical trials have found that antioxidant supplementation can significantly improve certain immune responses. Like omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fats are primarily used for energy. Consuming omega-9, a monounsaturated fatty acid, instead of other types of fat may have a number of beneficial health effects.

Immune C Liquid form for Children & Elderly Strong Antioxidant, Supports Healthy Immune System.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps support the immune system and helps neutralize free radicals in the body. Supplementation with vitamin C appears to be able to both aid in the prevention and treatment of respiratory and systemic infections. Vitamin C is an essential micronutrient for humans. It is a potent antioxidant and a cofactor for a family of biosynthetic and gene regulatory enzymes. Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C deficiency results in impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. In turn, infections significantly impact on vitamin C levels due to enhanced inflammation and metabolic requirements.

IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT
FOR ADULTS
Complete Multivitamin/Multiminerals
The immune system is a complex system of specialized cells and biological responses integrated into the entire body, from digestion to brain chemistry and everywhere else in the body. There is a large body of proven research about how certain vitamins and minerals may support the immune system. Adequate intakes of micronutrients are required for the immune system to function efficiently. Micronutrient deficiency suppresses immunity. This situation increases susceptibility to infections.

Vitamin D is involved in immune function, disease prevention and is vital to several different aspects of health. Although it’s most well-known for its ability to strengthen the bones and boost calcium absorption, it alsoaffects mood regulation and weight control. A deficiency in this crucial vitamin can cause issues like hair loss, chronic pain, sluggishness and decreased wound healing. Research suggests the vitamin D may have numerous benefits related to cancer, muscle strength, and mental health.

Zinc, an essential nutrient, is required in numerous processes including immune function, gene expression, DNA and protein synthesis, and more. Zinc’s role in immune function is one reason why it is a popular natural cold treatment. Studies have shown that zinc supplements help keep the immune system strong. A metanalysis on the efficacy of zinc found that 80 to 92 milligrams per day of reduced the duration of the common cold by 33%. Additionally, it’s been shown that older adults taking zinc supplements significantly reduced the risk of infectious diseases and improve immune response. Zinc like many other nutrients, is not produced naturally by the body because of this it must be obtained from supplements or food.

Echinacea is best known for its positive effects on the immune system. Numerous studies have shown that this herb supports immune system function, reducing the risk of contracting viruses and infections. One study done reported that the immune system benefited from 10 milligrams of echinacea per one kilogram of body weight, taken every day over a 10-day period. A meta-analysis found that echinacea may decrease the risk of catching the common cold by more than 50% and reduce the duration by one and a half days. Echinacea is a popular herb used worldwide. These plants contain a variety of active compounds that function as antioxidants used to defend cells against oxidative stress, a state linked to various diseases.

Probiotics 70-80% of our entire immune system resides within the digestive system. When necessary, inflammation in the intestines creates a pathway for the immune system to carry out an attack against invading viruses and bacteria. However, when inflammation is present but not needed, illnesses such as chronic infections can occur. Probiotics can also modulate the immune system, enhancing the body’s innate immunity. This modulating effect helps alleviate excessive inflammation in the digestive system, thereby boosting immune function. Probiotics offer a beneficial defense against the effects caused by this unwarranted inflammation. Probiotics help keep the digestive system healthy, to ensure the immune system functions well. Epithelial tissues in the intestines form a barrier against pathogenic microbes and other harmful substances present. Probiotics foster intestinal epithelial cell survival, strengthen cell barrier function, and initiate protective responses
